Essential Safety Tips for a Wonderful Christmas Season
Christmas is truly a wonderful time of the year. It is a time for family, merriment, and relaxation. There is music in the streets, decoration, and happy lights as you hurry to buy gifts for your loved ones and make merry. Unfortunately, it’s a wonderful time for burglars and thieves as well, who seek to take advantage of all the beautiful distractions to steal whatever they can. Beyond that, it is also a time of higher accident risk.
At Krypto, we are always seeking to preempt and prevent criminal behavior or accidents from happening, especially during the holidays. There are a lot of things you can do to avoid being the target of criminal behavior with just some preparation and caution.
Here is Krypto’s safety tips list for a happy, safe, undisrupted Christmas:
Keep yourself safe during driving
Try not to drive during nighttime or on your own, as that can present a target for criminal behavior. If you need to do so make sure you use busy streets and park in a well-lit area. Secure your car with a good alarm or other anti-theft device. The harder a target, the less likely a thief is going to choose it over an easier one.
While you are driving, if you are alone, make sure that the co-driver’s door is locked. Don’t drop your bag or other purchases and valuables in plain sight in the co-driver’s seat, as that presents higher motivation for crimes of opportunity.
Keep yourself safe during shopping
The more vigilant you are, the less likely you will be targeted for a mugging. Be aware that most attacks happen when there is a high probability for reward and good opportunity: around the ATM machine, in crowded stations and venues, when your valuables are visible, or when you look particularly distracted.
Avoid using the ATM at all if you can. If you have to, choose one that is inside a store or mall, near a police station, or in a well-lit, busy street. While using the ATM keep the keypad from being visible so your PIN isn’t seen and don’t throw away your ATM receipt.
While shopping and walking around, try to be together with another person. Even if you aren’t, make sure you wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Don’t wear expensive-looking jewelry and if you can, avoid having a handbag. Keep your wallet and cash on your person. If possible, only carry your credit card and ID. Finally, don’t look distracted. Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times.
Keep your home safe at all times
Keep your home’s doors and windows locked and secured at all times. Prevent people outside your home from looking in by keeping your curtains drawn, especially if the particular room is empty of people.
Make sure your house is well-lit and the yard or garden has no area where a burglar can hide and wait. Even if you leave the house for a moment, lock the door behind you. If you plan to leave for a vacation during the holidays, don’t post anything about it online until you return from it.
Lastly but most importantly, make sure your alarm system is up-to-date and always armed. A good alarm system with CCTV and round-the-clock monitoring by a remote Control Center will not only help protect your house in case of a burglary attempt, but also act as a deterrent for criminals.
During the holidays, especially due to the decorations and the lights we often use next to flammables, fire hazards multiply. Protect your house from fire by switching off decorative lights when you are away and keeping all naked flames, such as candles, monitored and secure. This is one more occasion where a good alarm system comes in.
A well-maintained and equipped alarm system will not only protect you from criminals but from other accidents, especially when it comes to fire.
